Marfigs' Munchies

Adventures in vegan eats and feats

WIAW and back in the driving seat

Welcome to What I Ate (for) Wednesday! Yesterday was a bit of a scramble since it was the last of a two day course that I presented on Advanced Word Editing, so there’s little to recommend my morning meals with regard to charm, but I did make up for it with sushi at least. Anyhow, onward ho!wiawmarfigslogo

Breakfast/05h30: 1/2 papaya filled with microwaved soy milk + 1/2 cup all bran until mushy, 1/4 cup soy milk + 1 TBSP chia seeds + 2 tsp psyllium husk and some Cherry Vanilla flavouring. YUM YUM YUM, except not, because I was so stuffed from late night snacking the evening before that I felt mightily ill and munching down was a bit of a struggle, even though I knew I had to in order to keep my blood sugar levels up and happy. Man-thing’s advice about cutting out late night munchies does have its merits because it means that the food doesn’t really digest if I go to bed immediately, and then I sit with sadness the next day. I’m trying to break habits that are counterproductive to the health of my body (and mind!) and this is a biggie that I struggle with most. The closest approximation I can think of is that late-night snacking is much like a pacifier to a baby; comforting and snooze-inducing, which is pretty important if you have raging insomnia as I do! papayaboatbfastSecond breakfast/08h00: An attempt to eat my rice crackers failed because of a dash to get everything ready for the researchers, but I tried! I got as far as a bite before I had to put it away 😦 I was feeling a bit better by this stage so there was much sadness at impending hunger. Luckily since this was day two I wasn’t such a red-faced mess as on day one. I haven’t lectured or presented a class in more than a year and a half, I think, and one quickly forgets how your body can go into deer-in-the-headlights mode if  you have 20 people staring intently at you, even if you know the work. Still, I love the topic and would gladly present this every week – it’s such a dorkish thing but it really helped in making my ebook (the little carrots by the page numbers, section breaks? All waves of nerdish glee at that!attemptatsecondbreakfastTeatime/10h30: My brain was slowly collapsing at this point, so the coffee and apple helped to pump up my sugar levels. Even the most fun topics can be draining after two hours!teatimesnackappleLunch/12h30: finally finished the 2 brown rice crackers with 1 tsp PB, coffee and some fizzy water to quench my scratchy throat from babbling/lecturing non-stop. Managed to join the gals for lunch since we ended at a decent hours and talked shop (or had differing opinions on Outlander and other such visual shiny trinkets). It turns out I’m a bit of a sadist and should have been more upset by certain events than sat squealing in glee, so I may have to reevaluate my mental state :p Even if my fare was pathetic sometimes it’s good to have company and get brain or soul food, not just edible food!
watermunchSecond lunch/13h30: When I got home after food shopping (dangerous to do it alone, I spend so much money!) I steamed up 1 cup or so of pumpkin and spinach. Yum. Followed by coffee, 2 TBSP protein powder + hot water and 1 small frozen banana for pudding!pumpkinlunchSomeone was pretending to be a vegan as well! (Also, look how big she is now! <3)

postlunchnomsAfternoon snack/15h30: 2 TBSP protein powder + hot water mix with cinnamon and some slurps from the mixture for my super awesome zebra cake from an upcoming ebook (yes, I’m inspired, can you tell?). Oh, and I was testing to see whether a persimmon was still ripe…and then I ate the whole thing. o.0 How does that happen? “Oh, I must taste this batter…and again…no but really, I could have misjudged how amazing it is – once more for science…munch munch munch“.proteinpowdershakebeetzebracakepreviewpersimmonnomsDinner/18h00: cucumber maki and a salad. We decided to go out, since we had hoped to have my fabulous MIL with us, but that fell through but I could tell Man-thing was twitchy to get out the house, and I must say my mood greatly improved, as he predicted. It’s good sometimes to get out and just relax in a dark corner of a restaurant and be fed for a change. Unfortunately,  because we weren’t at home you have to contend with this absolutely horrible photo since Man-thing uses flash on his phone and I don’t know how to work it to turn it off! 😦20150519_173651 (2)Post-dinner/20h00: hot choc + a sheet of nori + some chilled water, since I’m now spoilt and forget to drink enough, even though last week this time I was gasping for a mere half glass. Silly brain! Also, there was a carrot but no will to photograph it :p

hotchocnorisnackUltimate verdict: not nearly enough veggies/green stuff today! Tomorrow I plan to spoil myself with veggies galore. I actually had a tupperware full of steamed zucchini ready for the taking, so I’m perplexed that it didn’t feature eventually, but I’m just glad to be eating, even if it’s 90% carbs! It’s going to be carboloading for the upcoming few weeks it seems since, as you saw above, the theme of my upcoming ebook is root vegetables (I love themes!). I figured that I’m not always too creative with them and this is a chance to make use of ingredients that are in any case the cheapest in the store (which is important right now if I look at my bank balance). If you have any ideas, send me an email! 😉

  1. Hot chocolate!!! Carrot cake… Yum! All of that looks fantastic. I love how organized your day looks with your eats.

    • Yay thank you! I’m glad it looks organized because my brain was all over the place 😉 The hot chocolate is the best – I secretly add some protein powder to make it all creamy and stuff but I want to make this again to truly spoil myself –> 😀

  2. Hooray for WIAW! So happy to see another one join the party. Those eats look good to me – I’ve never stuffed papaya before – yum!

    • Thank you Melissa! 😀 My stuffed papaya of last week was even more glorious with soaked buckwheat groats, but it’s papaya season and I’m always so thrilled to wake up at 05h00 just to chow down on a stuffed delight 🙂

  3. Way to open WIAW with that carrot cake- YUM! Hope your stomach has improved since our last conversation!

    • Yay thank you! 😀 I’ve actually managed to go for some power walks in the past week or so, which I haven’t been able to do in months, so fingers crossed – thanks Arman! 🙂
