WIAW + BBQ mocha fig sauce with baked sweet potatoes


Ok, so it’s no big secret that our garden turned out to be the most amazing thing ever and that we were gifted with a tree full of figs. A lot of people piped up and suggested jam, which of course is a delectable suggestion, were it not for the fact that I’ve made balsamic fig jam before and wanted to try something different and more savoury. Breakfast: Banana + cucumber pumpkin smoothie bowl with all-bran and coffee, featuring one of my favourite NuNaturals Pure Liquid flavours: Peppermint! bfastsmoothTea-time snack: Leftover smoothie, steamed zucchini + salsa, coffee, 2 small steamed carrots + baked eggplant sliceszucchsnackcarrotssnackLunch: BBQ mocha fig sauce with baked sweet potatoes + saladtopplatebbqsaucepourjugIngredients (makes 3 1/2 – 4 cups):

  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup cooked red lentils
  • 1.5 cups fresh figs, chopped finely
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 TBSP chia seeds
  • 1 TBSP flax powder
  • 2 shots espresso
  • 2 heaped tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp fennel powder
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds/1 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/4 cup NuNaturals oat fiber or 2 tsp psyllium husks/thickener of choice OR add more red lentils if desired
  • 1 dropper NuNaturals NuStevia Pure Liquid Vanilla/2 tsp vanilla essence
  • Optional: 1/2 cup plain unsalted cashews

To serve: 1 medium/large sweet potato


  1. Mix together all bbq mocha fig sauce ingredients (including your cashews if you like) except the espresso and oat fiber or thickening agent and bring to boiling point, then simmer on low for 25 minutes, stirring every 15 or so minutes. Add the espresso and thickener, stir to mix, then cook for 15 more minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180C and spray a baking sheet. Steam your sweet potato slices for 5 minutes, then bake for 30 minutes, flipping then baking for another 15 until brownish spots appear.

Serve the bbq mocha fig sauce with oil-free baked sweet potatoes, salad and steamed spinach.bbqplatter closeupsaucetopplatebbqpotatoSuper delicious, hearty and flavourful! You can reduce the burning spices if it bugs you but I thought it was the perfect counter to the subtle sweetness of the figs and vanilla. This is going to be my lunch tomorrow with some zucchini pasta and I am honestly counting down the hours! You can also up the amount of red lentils to make it even thicker or to replace the oat fiber/thickening agent completely if you like – extra protein never hurts!topplatebbqpotato1I’m so in love with baked sweet potato right now, and luckily Ricki Heller has some amazing recipes that feature that shiny delight – see below for the link to her upcoming book 😀

There are so many flavour layers to enjoy and it is just delicious 😀 Also, Man-thing thoroughly approves and says I must make it again – always high praise!chickpeayum chickpeayum116h00 snack: 2 TBSP protein powder + non-dairy milk + NuNaturals NuStevia Pure Liquid + cinnamon = best hot drink ever! Steamed zucchini and flat beans with salsa + a dash more bbq fig sauce (yum)! I had super munchies after doing some Blogilates workouts and needed to munch something before some people came to drop off a kitten that we’ll be fostering until they move to a pet-friendly apartment (there was some sort of altercation with the kitten and the landlord’s dog; kitten lost the right to stay).milkdrink zucchinisnack118h30 dinner: zucchini and green bean soup + spinach. Man-thing actually made soup for the first time in forever thanks to my 10-hour shifts on Monday and Tuesday, so it feels nice to eat something I didn’t make (but totally micromanaged over IM).dinn12Dessert: 1/2 cup frozen blueberries + NuNaturals Cocoa Syrup. For the first time ever I read the back to see what a serving size is, and it’s 1/4 tsp. Yum yum! soybranAll in all, a splendidly delicious day! Quite a lot of munchies but even doing the smallest amount of exercise these days skyrockets my appetite immensely, especially if I’m doing crunches or other body weight tricks.
