Marfigs' Munchies

Adventures in vegan eats and feats

Life in Pictures – Link Up # 2

I’m participating again today in the Life in Pictures Link Up, since it was so much fun last time to gaze into people’s lives (in a way that wasn’t 100% obsessed with food :p). If you’re keen to join in for the next round head over here for more info.beige-camera-himeowset3

ETA: The point of the link up is to talk less and let others guess what you’ve been up to,  but I’m rather verbose :p

I usually make my first smoothie of the day at 05h30, hence the impossibility of taking awesome shots of my favourite meal and daily ritual.

morningsmoothie1Campus in the early hours is really something magical – few students and lots of quiet, greenery and strange art + architecture.

coffeespotwindowofficeJacaranda trees are the best part of living in my city ! Driving to work or to the shops is an adventure in colour and beauty. It’s even better if you’re a passenger, obviously :p

jacarandaI always stop on my way to the cat shelter at the green grocer for some deliciousness.

shoppingcollagepasriVolunteering at the cat shelter every Saturday evening is a great joy in my life – there are always new munchies to meet, kitties of all ages who need love, and foul litter boxes that need cleaning. We constantly sterilize ourselves between cages and I have to completely strip outside the house afterwards at our washing machine before going inside for fear of transmitting feline diseases to our own kitsy, Gatsby. Most un-sultry reason to disrobe :p

litterloveWe got our security finally upgraded, so now we can finally foster kittens again! 😀 😀 😀 We got FIVE little smushies today and will be getting FOUR more tomorrow! ❤ ❤ YAY! I just have to keep track of them all and their call signs and histories, all of which are rather dire.  I bought them a tent and some fluffy blankets, because we plan to continue with fostering cats and it’s always good to have shiny materials on hand. The guy at the kids’ toy shop thought I was insane when I said I wanted a kitten-sized tent.

meowset1 meowset2 meowset3purrpurrEvery time we get kittens we make sure to spend lots of time with Gatsby so that he doesn’t get too jealous or alone.

gatsbymeowAlas gym doesn’t happen as much now that we’ve moved – the idea of driving even further is kind of demoralizing – I need to get back into old routines!

Dinner is always some variation of vegetable, but I managed to rock 1/4 of a vetkoek with lentil hummus, buffalo sauce and veggies at some point – SUCH an indulgence!
foodcollageAt some point we babysat my little brother (2) and sister (5). Whilst Man-thing attended to my brother I read my little sister a story and got her to snooze. Then Man-thing read me stories whilst we waited for the parents and I fell asleep. Moral: children = no energy!

babysittingFinally, even though I don’t actually have time between my job and sideline editing, I still keep a stack of books by the bed just in case, and manage a few pages a night of whichever one strikes me best. The top one is something I borrowed, and the Defoe and Allende are purely for nostalgia.

What has made you the happiest this week?

Ahoy, I’m Margaux! History teacher and freelance editor; wench to my Man-thing; volunteer at a cat shelter; and handmaiden to our kitsy cats, Gatsby, Freyja and Atlas. This blog is dedicated to vegan food, occasionally overthrown by pictures of foster kittens and other fluffy creatures. I love sharing ideas and recipes, so don't be shy: stop by and say hi!

  1. Aww I love all the cat pictures! Lots of things have made me happy this week, but a few top things have been: 1) country dancing for the first time in FOREVER, 2) taking my parents dogs for a walk/run yesterday, and 3) learning more about Ayurveda. I went to a consult this week and am soaking up the new knowledge. Loving it!

    • Country dancing looks absolutely wild – would love it if they had that here! 😀 Do you know the moves or is it sort of like aerobics class where you stand at the back and try and keep up?

I’d never heard about Ayurveda until now – it looks interesting from what I can tell. The wiki page is pretty awesome on the random details, especially the part about Ayurveda being included in the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library – would love to get involved in such projects!

  2. If you live on campus, don’t you use the campus gym? And I see you’re a cat lover! I can see you being surrounded by cats, becoming one of those cat lady in your fifties. I’m also a morning person too, when everything is still quiet and the world hasn’t woken up yet everything is so peaceful.

I love your linkup. Thank you so much for coming to the party, you are a lot of fun. Hope to see you again on the 21st of November and feel free to bring some friends, since partying is always fun with big groups. #LIPlinkup

    • We actually live off campus, and even though I work there a few days a week I hate using gym showers before work, because then you have to transport a whole closet with you, and after work is too busy. The gym I’m at now is awesome but I must just move my butt and get there – it’s only 5 minutes further by car, so it’s 100% procrastination.

Thanks for inviting me again – I love this link up business 😀 And yes, totally a cat lady, except my husband is ten times worse than I am – he’ll send photos of our cat to family members and has a special voice he uses to “speak” for the cat (usually about how hungry he is, or to detail his plans for world domination). 🙂

  3. Love all the kitty photos! I saw your link in the #LIPlinkup 🙂
