29 days of rice – WIAW + strawberry rice salad – day 15

On Sunday my dad and the family came over for a quick visit to fetch his toolbox and other stuff, and I was left with two rather awesome presents. A delightful bowl for Gatsby (I suspect it was my little sister’s executive decision), and some fresh strawberries for me out of their garden. Win and win! I’ve been daydreaming about what to make with the strawberries, since they’re too precious to just eat whole, and naturally they fare no better than in a salad of sorts!

Oh, and while we’re at it, WIAW!wiaw fall into good habits buttonberrydelicious

Breakfast/05h30: 1 pumpkin-zucchini + papaya smoothie bowl + 1/2 cup of all bran (yum). Coffee! Man-thing’s morning coffees are the best. Anyway, I know a lot of people meow and carry on about processed foods, but stuff like my delicious all bran is one of the few treats I indulge in that comes out of a plastic packet. I figure one should also live realistically! I love my buckwheat cereal, but this is like candy, and after a sleepless night I insisted on spoiling myself 😀WP_000223Second breakfast.07h00: 1 carrot

WP_000226Tea-time/10h00: 2 brown rice crackers + 2 tsp tahini + cucumber. The university tea room has the most hideous table covers ever!

WP_000227Pre-lunch snack/12h50: 1/4 cup steamed pumpkin + 1/2 cup steamed green beansWP_000232My aunt and grandmother visited today, so I had to postpone my lunch since I was racing against the clock to make it home before they arrived to try and tidy up, even though I knew it was futile – despite our best efforts our place is still a mess! My stomach was practically eating itself from hunger at this point – usually I’m pretty dandy with these morning portions but something today just turned that on its head. I suspect it has something to do with a little cat who kept us up all night fighting the neighbourhood cats through our bedroom window. Waking up 5 times a night does make one rather nibbly :p

Once they left I had an awesome 5-ingredient peanut butter cookie that I served to them – I forgot to munch one myself while they were eyeballing the new poz, so nervous was I!cookietower3 Luckily yesterday we managed to find a home for our orchids – fingers crossed they are tolerant of their new spot – orchids are such little uppity greens! Also, hideous blinds that will hopefully be removed very, very soon. Oh, and since we have no idea how to use a fireplace I decided we can use the fireplace stuff as plant holders. Want not! Also, spot the cat.

WP_000233Lunch/15h00: Strawberry rice salad with lemon tahini drizzle

  • 1/2 cup pre-cooked brown rice
  • 1 cup strawberries, chopped
  • 1/2 lettuce head, shredded
  • 1/2 cup brown lentils, pre-cooked
  • 1 green pepper, diced
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp tahini
  • 1 TBSP lemon juice
  • 1 TBSP apple cider vinegar
  • 1 TBSP boiling water
  • some splashes jalapeno sauce

strawberrysaladnomstopsaladberryThis salad was just awesome! Fresh but filling – what a delight 😀

berrydeliciouscloseup16h00 snack: popcorn and 1 tsp goji berries + 1/2 cucumber – I had such munchies!WP_000237 WP_000238After snackage we went back to our old poz to drop some stuff off and spotted a double rainbow – the second one is rather faint but the one rainbow was absolutely breathtaking. I don’t expect anyone to gasp wonderously with phone camera quality pictures, obviously :p

WP_000246Dinner: zucchini + pumpkin soup + steamed zucchini + cherry tomatoes on the side. Can you tell I love my zucchini? 😀

WP_000247Post-dinner nibbles: 1/2 cup soy milk l+ 1 TBSP flax powder + cinnamon (yum and yum! I was admittedly too greedy and gulped it all before I could take a snap, whoops), 2 steamed carrots with lemon juice.WP_000248Whew! Anyway, I can’t wait for the weekend – I feel stretched a bit thin with all these things to do – I absolutely hate being in a messy, half-done house. We’re discovering all sorts of items we need to buy, like wire racks for veggies, lights for outside the house, and what not, but it takes some work to stay excited. I figure that, once everything is done and we can actually sit outside the house with some chilly rice-nog and be merry, the thrill of being homeowners should re-emerge!

What do you do to motivate yourself to do unpleasant chores?

  2. I don’t understand this whole rice challenge thing your doing? Why?

    • I explained it in my first post only – we moved to a new house and to celebrate I took the number of our new house (29) and decided to make a dish for every day using one ingredient that had to be in all of them – rice. It’s not a challenge more than just a way to get me to blog through the chaos of moving house and try new things.

  3. Oh well, I figure I’ll be best off without a cat for a little longer then. I can’t handle anybody messing with my sleep though I’m sure if it was my cat I’d be forgiving, too.
The salad looks like an artwork. Too bad strawberry season is looong over for us.
The best way I can motivate myself is by little promises of what I’ll treat myself to after I’m done.

    • Unfortunately there’s no winning with a cat! We locked him on the other side of the house and at 04h00 I started hearing scratching on the door – argh! But yes, they are so bladdy cute that you can’t really stay mad for too long. :p Thank you, and I totally agree about that way of motivating oneself – even if it’s something small, I figure a reward system is the only way to get stuff done. 🙂
